This thesis explores romanticity in Im Hwa’s poems. In the mid-1930s, Im Hwa came to formulate a kind of romanticism as an alternative to the waning proletarian literature and as a way to deepen his realism. Moreover, it was also an effort to surmount the social and political crisis in which KAPF had experienced. These efforts made his romanticism ‘progressive’ as it sets out to advance an optimistic prospect of future through literary practice. Im Hwa’s poems of the 1930s differed in tenor from his earlier work, as the former was far from the militant and revolutionary mood of the latter. To the gloomy and distressing condition in which he had been placed on the dissolution of KAPF, Im Hwa first responded with a sceptical view of the realities and a strong historical sense of loss. His perspective, however, soon went through another transformation. Giving up a class-consciousness position of proletarian literature, he rather chose to convey the harsh realities as they were, particularly from a historical perspective. Through this series of transformations, Im obtained what he claimed as ‘progressive romanticity,’ and it enabled him to hope for a bright future in the midst of the distressing realities. Romanticity in Im Hwa ’spoems was thus formed on the basis of his head-on dealing with the realities in which the Korean nation were placed. His poetical subject displayed a very strong will to overcome his despair and to obtain an optimistic and hopeful sense of the future. With his unbridled passion and progressive attitude, Im Hwa faced up to the hard realities his fellow countrymen were suffering, and through this remained a ‘young man’ and poet who viewed the future of his country bright. It is indeed striking that his progressive and positive romanticity persisted under the brutal Japanese rule in the 1930s.
